Paths of Illumination A
Spirituality Writing Project
Introduciton The following ten writings are by members and friends of the Church of the Nativity. It is our hope that others will join in this kind of dialogue and sharing so we can produce similar publications. These were gathered in the summer of 2003. Their content includes essays, poetry, short stories, journal entries or straight-forward teaching. Whatever the format, they are all sincere attempts to talk about God; to raise questions or simply marvel at the mysteries of living this life amidst the paradoxes, the soaring joys or the thundering defeats each of us meet in our journey. Each submission, in its own right, is touching. You’ll find yourself considering the high tech in one moment but soon surprised that it is speaking about your faith. You’ll find yourself in The Bath & Body Shop or pondering a childhood loss and life learnings. You’ll marvel at the persistence, vulnerability and yet connectedness of desert trees. You’ll find yourself reminiscing of your first encounters with the brevity of this life, wondering of the one to come. You’ll smile about the time God took the drive-through orders at Burger King. You’ll be moved by a daughter’s remembrance of the lessons she learned from her father before his death. Most of us will be brought back to consider the time when we’ve been at the absolute bottom, only to find our way home again. All of us consider how we know when God is near. Whenever you write, you risk. Particularly when you try to express something of yourself with regard to your sense of where God is in your life. Take all of these writings as our risk in offering you something of ourselves and our walk in life. It is through our stories that we celebrate our community. It is within our community that we become increasingly aware that God walks among us.
